Queen of Peace School Installs Clear Flow Aquaponic System

MISHAWAKA — During the past year, Queen of Peace School has found ways to combine elements in nature, science and technology in an effort to expand students’ understanding of agriculture. In the process, the school’s new Outdoor Education Center and Aquaponics lab have harvested new methods of teaching and organic farming, which incorporate God’s desire for stewardship of earth’s natural resources.

Montello event Saturday to highlight state's aquaculture industry

Most people immediately think of fish when they hear about aquaculture.

At Nelson and Pade Inc., in Montello, fish is only part of the business.

Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection Secretary Ben Brancel will be at the aquaponics company Saturday to help people learn more about the industry on Aquaculture Day.

“They raise tilapia, and I thought it was a good way to go out and help the fish farming industry and advance their agriculture efforts in Wisconsin,” Brancel said.

Brancel said fish farms provide only about 2 percent of consumed seafood in the state, so he sees room for a lot of growth.

Aquaponics Course Drawing Students to Booming Industry

MONTELLO - Very few people even know what aquaponics is, but students who recently completed a unique college course in the system that melds hydroponics with aquaculture will find themselves big fish in an equally be sea when it comes to finding jobs.  

"We could employ several of them right now, said Rebecca Nelson, one of the course developers and a principal in Nelson and Pade, an aquaponics technology, systems and supplies business in Montello.

Twenty-seven students graduated from the first-ever hybrid, full-semester, three-credit college course developed as a partnership among Nelson and Pade and UW-Stevens Point's biology department and the Northern Aquaculture Demonstration Facility.
